Fun After-School Activities to Ward off the Back-to-School Blues

Although it’s still technically summer (according to the calendar!), many school-aged kids in the Cobb County School District (CCSD) started the school year on August 1st. Some of those kids may have been ready to get back into the swing of things, but many others may have a case of the back-to-school blues.

In a recent article for Care.com titled, “101 After-School Activities for Kids,” contributor Kayla Mossien touches upon the benefits of after-school activities:

"It's no secret that after-school activities do wonders for a child's development. They are linked to improving social skills, grades, overall coordination, sense-of-self and relationships with adults other than mom and dad."

Is your school-aged child still in a summer-vacation frame of mind and feeling bored after school? Or perhaps he or she simply needs a fun activity or two to keep them occupied after school? If so, you’ll be glad to know there are plenty of fun after-school activities right here in our area, and others that you don’t even have to leave your home or neighborhood for.

Here are several after-school activities and ideas to help nip boredom in the bud!

1. Visit your local library
Many libraries offer after-school activities ranging from reading groups and story times to special exhibits and more. Click here to see the upcoming events for the Cobb County Public Library System.

2. Go for a hike and/or bike ride

After a long day of school, there’s nothing like a hike or bike ride to burn off excess energy and enjoy a little fresh air before dinner and homework. Find some of the best trails in and around Marietta, Georgia by clicking here.

3. Join a local Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts troop

Getting involved in scouting gives a child a variety of opportunities. From socializing to providing service to the community to building self-confidence and more, any school-aged child can benefit from becoming a Boy Scout or Girl Scout.

4. Break out the sidewalk chalk

Channel your child’s inner artist by letting him or her draw and color on the sidewalk by your home or in your driveway.

5. Plan and prepare after-school snacks and dinners together

Search the internet for healthy, quick and easy recipes you and your child can make together. By letting your kids help you with prepping and cooking, you’re not only spending quality time together, but you’re also teaching him or her valuable life skills. Plus it’s a big help for you, too.

What other after-school activities would you add?

Here’s hoping the new school year is full of fun and learning for you and your kids!
