5 Ways to Organize Your Home for the New Year

Is one of your New Year’s resolutions to organize your home? Is the clutter beginning to annoy you?

Don’t despair – we have suggestions for helping you take charge and make your home look and feel organized.

Here are tips to help you de-clutter and organize your home

1. Out with the old

Give yourself a day or so and go through each closet, shelf, and drawer. Create separate piles to throw out or otherwise get rid of items you don't need. A good rule of thumb is, "if you don't use it, lose it."

Donate gently used items to charity or pass them on to friends or family. If unneeded items are in good shape, consider selling them at a local consignment shop or even on eBay.

2. Add creative storage solutions for each room in your home

Now that you have taken care of the things you no longer need, it’s time to organize what is left over. As well as using existing closet and shelf space, consider investing in bookshelves, as well as decorative (yet functional) baskets and trays. You can use these extra storage solutions to keep each room of your home tidy, from your kitchen to your bedrooms to your bathrooms.

3. Invest in furniture that can also double as storage

As writer Jessica Padykula points out in a post with home organization tips she wrote for the site SheKnows, “there are beds, ottomans, coffee tables and more that have ample space hidden within to instantly eliminate clutter.”

For example, if you have a coffee table in the living room which includes a large drawer, you can quickly and easily store magazines out of sight when you’re expecting company.

4. Put your wall space to use

An excellent way to reduce floor clutter is to add hooks where you can. For example, adding an over-the-door hook and/or organizer in your bedroom lets you hang a laundry bag for dirty clothes and lines. This will make it easier to do laundry as well as reduce clutter.

5. Resolve to not only organize your home at the beginning of the year but to also keep it organized all year

Now that your home is organized, stay consistent and do a little each day (at least!) to keep it organized. Continue going through your closets and drawers on a regular basis to discard older and/or unused items (see tip #1) and commit to using the storage solutions you have in place.
