Simple Ways to Make the Best of College Moving

It’s that time of year again where college students from all across the country are in the process of packing and preparing to move back to school before the start of the new semester. For some of these students, it’s their first time moving away from home. This is indeed an exciting rite of passage, yet stressful at the same time.

However, with a bit of planning and a good dose of patience (for the students and their parents!), the college moving process can be made much simpler. And who knows, it may even end up being a lot of fun!

Whether you’re a first-timer or you have been off to college before, here are some tips to help you make the best of your college moving experience

1. Consider shipping non-essential belongings

If you must rely on public transportation or flying (or both) for moving, then you may want to ship some of the items you won’t need right away to your new address.

2. Ship and/or pack items in boxes

Keep in mind that boxes are much easier to carry up a flight or more of stairs than large trunks or bulky suitcases. Labeling your boxes in advance will also help you feel more organized as you’re moving in.

If you already know your dorm or apartment room is located on an upper floor, you might even want to rent a dolly. This will save you tons of time waiting for elevators and you’ll be prepared in the event there are no elevators.

3. Pack efficiently

If you are driving, then maximizing the space in your vehicle is key. Consider these tips via author and blogger Hélène Tragos Stelian:

  • Fold down rear seats
  • Fit small/soft items in gaps between other items
  • Cushion breakables with clothing and bedding
  • Leave clothes you would normally hang up on their hangers, cinch the tops of several hangers with a rubber band, and then cover them with a tall garbage bag (as a makeshift garment bag)

4. Don’t bring your entire wardrobe or everything you own

This is especially true for students who plan to travel back home or for parents who plan to visit at least once a semester. Out-of-season clothes can be traded out for more seasonal attire during these visits.

It’s also good to remember that most dorm rooms have limited space. Pack only what you really need, and know there are things you can buy once you’re settled in. Besides, shopping for items to decorate and accessorize your dorm room is one of the fun parts of the college moving experience!

Are you in the process of packing and moving to college? We hope these suggestions are helpful for making the best of your college moving experience.
