Lower Gas Prices Help Commuters

Lower Gas Prices Help Commuters

Commuters think about three things: traffic, time and gas prices. Simply, they help or hurt their commute to work. With gas prices down during 2014 and 2015, the Atlanta intown commute to the suburbs has supported a boom of moving renters and buyers outside of the city. The great news is the average gallon of gas is expected to drop again in 2016 for the fourth year in a row.

“The U.S. Energy Information Administration in a mid-December report said it expected a full-year 2016 average price at the pump of $2.36 per gallon, lower than the expected 2015 average by about 3 percent,” according to upi.com.

According to a 2014 study by Nerdwallet.inc, the average Atlanta worker commutes 27.5 minutes to work each way daily. In fact, the AJC reports that Atlanta tops the country in commuters, with an average 12.8 mile commute. Typical commute distance is defined as the median within-metro-area commute distance in the study conducted by Brookings Institution.

With Atlanta gas prices currently hovering around $1.47 (intown) – $1.70 (Kennesaw) for regular, commuters can feel better about the miles and the time they are spending on the road. A medium size car averages between 15 – 17 gallons, so at $1.60 per gallon traveling 25 miles a day, the lower gas prices allow savings towards other living expenses such as rent.

Atlantans know that traffic is a challenge, but when the right job involves a commute and the suburbs have greater appeal, now is the right time to make a move. For those not ready to invest in home ownership, renting is an easy solution.
