Decorating Tips for Renters

Decorating Tips for Renters

Have you recently moved into a rental property or are you planning to move into one sometime in the near future? One question you may have when renting is whether you should decorate the rental property and if so, how much time and effort you should invest in decorating. After all, you will be calling this property your “home,” whether it’s for only a few months or for the long haul.

Adding your own personal touches and style through decorating is certainly one of the easiest ways to make your place feel comfy and cozy. So regardless of the amount of time you’ll spend in the rental property, even a little decorating will go a long way.

Before making any major changes to your rental property, however, it’s a good idea to double-check your lease agreement and/or consult with your property manager. For example, your landlord might not allow wallpapering, painting, or nailing holes in the walls. You may also end up losing part or all of your deposit if you make changes against your property manager’s consent.

Otherwise, get ready to make your mark and make your rental property look (and feel!) like home.

Here are a few simple decorating tips you can use to get started:

1)      Personalize your place with framed pictures of friends and family.

2)      Obtain various indoor plants and flowers to add colors your interior as well as your porch or patio.

3)      Collect versatile furniture pieces that are easy to move around your rental property, as well as to your future home or homes.

4)      Use decorative bookshelves or crates that can also double as shelves and/or storage.

5)      Express yourself with accessories in colors and patterns that match your style. Although you probably won’t have permission to completely renovate your rental property, you can add a significant amount of style with items such as the following:

  • Window treatments (blinds, drapes, toppers, etc.)
  • Accent rugs
  • Mirrors
  • Centerpieces and tablecloths
  • Baskets
  • Vases
  • Throw pillows
  • Bedding/Linens
  • Lamps
